The categories listed below are the levels of Irish dance
and will help you determine which classes to enroll in.
New Beginners
are dancers who are Irish dancing for the first time.
Beginners
have been dancing 6 to 12 months.
Advanced Beginners are
beginners from last year and have been dancing for 1 full year.
Novice
is anyone who competed in a Feis, in Advanced Beginner and placed 1st.,
2nd., or 3rd. in competition.
Prizewinner
is anyone who competed in a Feis, in Novice and placed 1st only
in competition.
Preliminary Champion
a)
The dancer
must have won a 1st place in a LIGHT Dance and a 1st place in a
HEAVY dance in the Prizewinner grade,
and
b)
Have never won 1st,
2nd or 3rd in Open Championship.
Open Champion
is anyone who places 1st two times in preliminary championships moves to
open championships as soon as the second win is achieved.
Ceili & Figure Dancing -
Performed in groups for competition. 30 ceili dances taken from the book
Ár Rinncidhe Foirne, and is officially recognized by An Coimisiun le Rince
Gaelacha, Ireland.
Combination Classes
are for students that compete at different levels. For example: a dancer
may have placed 1st in reels to move up to the next level but did not
place in jigs. So the dancer could be in Advanced beginner jigs but
Novice reels.
Please match your classes as close as you can to match
their proper level in competition. Second year students automatically
become advanced beginners.
